The IRS is issuing automatic payments of up to $1,400 to taxpayers who missed claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns.
What’s the Recovery Rebate Credit?
The Recovery Rebate Credit is for individuals who didn’t receive the full Economic Impact Payments (stimulus checks) during the pandemic.
After reviewing their records, the IRS found that around one million people didn’t claim it when they filed their 2021 taxes.
Now, the IRS is sending these payments automatically.
Who’s Eligible?
You might be eligible if:
- You filed a 2021 tax return but didn’t claim the Recovery Rebate Credit.
- You were eligible for a stimulus payment but didn’t receive it.
How Much Will You Get?
You could receive up to $1,400 per person. The IRS expects to send out $2.4 billion in total.
The IRS started sending payments and most people should receive them by February 2025.
